WASHINGTON – The president of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of state right-to-life affiliates, said today that pro-life Indiana Governor Mike Pence is an “excellent choice” for vice president by presumptive Republican nominee Donald J. Trump. Trump announced Pence as his running mate via Twitter this morning. A press conference is expected tomorrow morning in New York. “With a solid pro-life voting record on abortion during his time in Congress, and through his pro-life actions as Indiana governor, Mike Pence has proven himself to be a strong leader for the right to life,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life.

During his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives (2001-2012), Pence, served as a member of the House Judiciary Committee and on the Subcommittee on the Constitution. In those positions, Pence actively participated in hearings and committee action on a number of major pro-life bills, including the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, enacted in 2003, and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, enacted in 2004. National Right to Life scorecards for those years are accessible via National Right to Life’s Legislative Action Center.

As governor of Indiana, Pence has championed several pro-life measures, including most recently a bill that, among other things, would ban abortionists from knowingly aborting an unborn baby solely because of a disability or because of the baby’s race or gender. It is currently enjoined pending litigation.

“Mike Pence brings a strong pro-life background to the Republican ticket, which contrasts with the extreme pro-abortion position of Hillary Clinton and the Democrats,” said Tobias.

Founded in 1968, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization. Recognized as the flagship of the pro-life movement, NRLC works through legislation and education to protect innocent human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.
