We just received this letter from our friends at National Right to Life asking us to pray for Rep Scalise and Matt Mika, both of whom are still in critical condition. Pray for their healing, pray for peace and comfort for their families, and pray for a cultural change so that we no longer have these senseless attacks on sacred human lives.
Dear Friends,
I have no doubt you are praying for Rep. Steve Scalise and the others hurt in the shootings yesterday, but I want to encourage you to continue those prayers. We would ask that you also contact your friends, urging them to do the same.
Rep. Steve Scalise, along with two members of the Capitol police force– Crystal Griner and David Bailey, Zach Barth, a congressional aide to Texas Rep. Roger Marshall, and Matt Mika, lobbyist for Tyson Foods and a former congressional staffer, all required medical attention.
Thankfully, Griner, Bailey, and Barth are doing well; Barth was interviewed with his boss this morning from the Capitol. Rep. Scalise and Mika are both still listed in critical condition.
Mika’s family issued a statement this morning, in which they stated , “Matt was shot multiple times in his chest and arm and suffered massive trauma. He remains in critical condition in the ICU at George Washington University Hospital. He requires assistance to breathe and will need additional surgeries. Matt has been alert, conscious and communicating through notes.” In a statement last night, they asked for privacy.
Rep. Scalise had two surgeries yesterday and another one this morning. The hospital last evening released the following: “ Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip. The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center. He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations. We will provide periodic updates.”
Steve is not just a friend to the pro-life movement and strong ally of National Right to Life. He is one of us. Saving babies is at the top of his priority list. Sharon Rodi, our director from Louisiana, has known Steve his entire life and is extremely close to his family. He is one of the most dedicated and effective pro-life people in Congress. We pray for healing and hope to see him back in his role as Majority Whip soon.
Sincerely,
Carol Tobias, President
